HYM Symphonic Winds

Conductors: Steven Byron and Mark Gooding

When a fifth band was formed in 1988, the most advanced of the bands became known as Symphonic Winds. It has given many performances of contemporary music of extreme technical complexity. Visiting composers have included Philip Sparke, Stephen Dodgson, Sam Becker and Nigel Penfold.

Much of the repertoire for concerts at home and abroad are the brilliant arrangements by Neville Mackinder.

Symphonic Winds is conducted by Steven Byron and HYM Director Mark Gooding.

Steven started playing the trombone at the age of 8 at Stanburn School and joined HYM as a student in 1992. At the Royal College, Steven studied the trombone with Michael Hext and Lindsay Shilling and conducting with Neil Thompson. He graduated in 2004 and now teaches at Haberdashers Boys School and Merchant Taylors.

Steven and HYM Symphonic Winds gave outstanding performances of music by Percy Grainger at St. John’s Smith Square in 2008.
