Auditions for prospective students
We are still open for new young musicians to join our bands and orchestras at HYM. If you know of anyone that may want to join, please bring them along for an audition.
Basic requirements
You need to be able to play your instrument and read music. If you are taking grade exams, that's great, but not essential.
HYM does not offer instrument tuition so you will probably be having lessons at school or privately.
What HYM does offer is ensemble playing, challenging music and plenty of concerts.
What to do?
For most young players, you can come along for an audition on almost any Saturday morning during term time. Try to arrive at Hatch End High School at about 9:45am and go to the HYM office (which is the portakabin by the Great Hall, visible from the covered walkway). Let them know you are here for an audition and on what instrument and they advise you where to go.
When to come?
The earlier in a term the better, but we may accept new students at almost any time.
When you have auditioned, you will probably be invited to spend the rest of the morning with a specific group to try it out to see if you enjoy it.
If you like it, you take home an enrolment form, you fill it in - and come back next week!
Preparing for you audition...
Auditions can be very stressful (particularly for parents!) so HYM makes every effort to be as friendly and informal as possible. We ask you to play a short unaccompanied piece (not too ambitious - something you are comfortable with), and then a little sight-reading.
Which group?
Younger students will be assigned to a band or orchestra that suits their age and ability.
Most of the HYM groups meet on a Saturday morning at HYM.
Older students may need to audition at a Thursday or Friday rehearsal with a senior group.
